The benefits of relaxing in our wonderful BergSpa have become something of an open secret! For guests at Hotel Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide, the revitalising treatments and massages in our mountain spa are an absolute highlight. And of course, natural products are very important to us. Therefore, Carina Barblan, the innovative manager of our spa, and Franco Schröttenthaler, an equally innovative gardener, decided to produce their own massage oil using local mountain herbs. The key to translating that idea into reality was another member of our staff, who spends the summer months on the Greek island of Zakynthos. There, she was familiar with an olive press where excellent oil is produced from local olives in a highly sustainable manner. Exactly what Carina Barblan was looking for: high-quality olive oil as the base product. Now all that was missing was the local Swiss ingredient: the herbs that add the finishing touch. Lenzerheide has a special climate because of its altitude (1,473 metres above sea level). Which herbs would be most suitable? Where should we plant them? In the end, we opted for special raised beds. As well as making cultivation far easier, it adds some natural green to the hotel courtyard.
A meeting with gardener Franco Schröttenthaler from the Multikraft company gave the idea its final push. Thanks to his expertise and assistance, we were able to plant the right herbs and treat them with special substances obtained from micro-organisms to ensure strong and healthy growth. No artificial crop protection products find their way into Carina’s herb beds! The robust plants grow well and are added to the oil to heighten its natural effect.
